Your trip might be finished. But your transformation is just beginning.
In Celtic traditions, Samhain (pronounced “Sow-in”) marked a sacred time of transition. The end of the harvest, the beginning of winter, and a thinning of the veil between worlds — a moment to pause, honour the past, and welcome the unknown.
Modern-day Halloween may have borrowed the costumes and pumpkins, but Samhain reminds us of something deeper. It’s a time for reflection. For remembering. And for reintegration.
Which, funnily enough, is exactly what travel asks of us when we come home.
The Afterglow Phase Is Where the Real Work Begins
Whether you’ve just returned from a hike in Iceland, a retreat in Bali, or a weekend escape closer to home — how you land matters.
So often, we return from a trip and rush straight back into work, emails, routines. But transformational travel isn’t just about the trip. It’s about what you do with it.
- Did something shift in you?
- Did a moment stay with you?
- Did you feel more like yourself than you have in years?
If so, don’t rush past it. Sit with it. Honour it.
Because that moment might just be the beginning of something.
A Simple Way to Reconnect
One thing I now do — inspired by a practice in Bali — is take a moment after a long day to reconnect to the intention of a trip or moment.
A quiet pause. A few deep breaths. A splash of water over my face. A reminder: you’re not the same person you were before that journey.
And you don’t have to be.
A Travel Tip for November: Mark the End
Try this when you return from your next trip:
- Set aside 15 minutes.
- Look at a photo from your time away.
- Write down one insight, feeling, or moment that moved you.
- Then write one action you’ll take to bring that into your everyday life.
Transformation doesn’t need a round-trip ticket. Sometimes it just needs a moment of intention.
